While checking out what’s new on Vogue.com , I came across this fun story article by Anna Wintour.  I actually remember this 1988 Vogue cover ( I read my Mom’s Vogue’s back then….and by read I mean look at all the pretty pictures.)  It’s so much fun to know the story behind this cover.  Enjoy!

Honoring the 120th Anniversary:
Anna Wintour Shares Her Vogue Story

by Anna Wintour

“Working on this September’s 120th anniversary cover of a Marc Jacobs–clad Lady Gagamade me think about my very first cover as the editor of Vogue. It was November 1988, and starred the gorgeous Israeli model Michaela Bercu, photographed by Peter Lindberghand styled by Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele. Michaela was wearing an haute couture Christian Lacroix jacket with a beaded cross, all very “Like a Prayer,” and stonewashed Guess jeans. The jacket was actually part of a suit, but the skirt didn’t fit Michaela; she had been on vacation back home in Israel and had gained a little weight. Not that that mattered. In fact, it only served to reinforce the idea to take couture’s haughty grandeur and playfully throw it headlong into real life and see what happened.

What none of us expected was to run that picture on the cover, least of all the magazine’s printers, who called up and asked with some consternation, “Has there been a mistake?” I couldn’t blame them. It was so unlike the studied and elegant close-ups that were typical ofVogue’s covers back then, with tons of makeup and major jewelry. This one broke all the rules. Michaela wasn’t looking at you, and worse, she had her eyes almost closed. Her hair was blowing across her face. It looked easy, casual, a moment that had been snapped on the street, which it had been, and which was the whole point. Afterwards, in the way that these things can happen, people applied all sorts of interpretations: It was about mixing high and low, Michaela was pregnant, it was a religious statement. But none of these things was true. I had just looked at that picture and sensed the winds of change. And you can’t ask for more from a cover image than that.”

With sunshine promised in the forecast and nothing but rain in sight, I decided to go to Australia.  Oh, and by that I mean going on line to check out some street fashion pics from Australian Fashion Week at Vogue.com.   I figured I was in need of some summer inspiration since, yesterday, I was trying to convince myself that a turtleneck at the end of May on the West Coast was a appropriate seasonal attire.  Don’t worry.  I didn’t go there.

Jason Wu launched his debut collection in 2006 and has since made a name for himself as one of America’s top fashion designers.

My eye has been drawn to his collections more and more and his Spring 2011 collection is definitely eye catching.  He combines soft feminine fabrics with bold colour.  Florals and stripes give the collection personality.  I think I could be Wu’d (yes, horrible pun intended) to wear any one of his stunning designs.  Oh, and of coarse if money was no object.

Fun fact… Jason Wu, who was born in Taiwan, moved to Vancouver at the age of nine!  He later studdied fashion at Parsons School of Design.
