When it comes to a Summer time getaway, nothing beats a good old family road trip.  We were fortunate enough to have a beauty of a car, courtesy of Ford, for our week away.  For this little getaway we took our 2016 Ford Edge to Penticton, BC.  Being surrounded by lush vineyards and a gorgeous lake, had us feeling like we were far from home even though it was only about a 4 hour drive.  So perfect for when you are traveling with little ones.

Most days were spent on a little adventure like floating down the cannal or hitting up the farmers market. We spent our evenings going for ice cream, having BBQ’s, and taking in outdoor concerts.  No day was complete without a walk along the beach.  It was the perfect  little escape from day to day life.

We rented the cutest little house through AirBnB.  It was great to have a big yard and a huge garden that we were able to pick fresh veggies from for dinner.  We were only a 5 minute drive to the beach and main town area.  Our Ford was perfect for keeping our phones charged, rocking out to satellite radio, and getting us around in comfort.  Maddie called it our special car.  The best was power outlets in the trunk of the car.  We plugged in our air pump so we could blow up our giant floating “Party Island” to float down the cannal in.  That was Maddie’s favourite adventure.  It took us almost two hours to float on down and when we finished she said, ” I want to do it again!”  She fell asleep shortly after that.

It’s been a while since I’ve shared a video with you.  This trip seemed like the perfect opportunity to record some memories.  I hope you enjoy!

Song: Cool by Jason Blaine

Summer arrived a little late here in Vancouver, but it’s now here and it’s hot!   I’m a sucker for all things bright and cheery in the hot weather.  To celebrate Summer in this glorious city, I thought I would share some of my Summer essentials.

1) My phone…obviously. I used to carry my big camera with me everywhere but find with a toddler in tow, my phone is just way easier.
2) A hat. On Tuesday I went for a big walk with my mother-in-law and Maddie. We stopped for smoothies and of course had ample play time at the water park. My mom wardrobe that day was all worked around wearing this hat. I picked it up the last time we were in Maui.
3) My prescription sunnies. I have been wearing these non-stop since I got them. They are from the Clearly Contacts Camilla d’Errico collection.
4) My hair goes up and back a lot when it’s hot. If I’m not wearing a hat, you will probably find me in one of my I Wear The Headdress turban hair wraps. This yellow is everything!
5) My Swell bottle goes everywhere with me. Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate!
6) Sun protection is so important, but I like to use natural options. I just started using this one from Boo Bamboo Suncare. It is available at Whole Foods and also comes in one for your kids.
7) Picnics, time at the beach, or just relaxing at the park are all the best parts of Summer. This gorgeous  Everyday Family Blanket from Sunday Dry Goods is a must for all families or for those who’d like someone to curl up with them at the beach. They are a local Vancouver company too! Trust me you want to get your hands on one of their Turkish towels.
8 ) Fresh bright blooms in my house are the perfect way to bring a bit of the outdoors in. I often snip a rose or two from my garden, but sometimes I like to swing by my fave local florist, Tala Florist, for something different.

I have been busy testing out some new beauty product and want to share some of my favourite Summer products.  The best part is that they are all drugstore brands so  they are affordable too!  Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for these products the next time you are browsing the beauty department.

1) Makeup Revolution Blush Palette: This is a new brand to Canada!  Originally from London, they believe that quality products can still be affordable.  This palette has a more bronzy/metalicy look to it.  Perfect for sun kissed skin.

2) Jergens Hydrating Coconut Moisturizer: This big bottle of coconut deliciousness is sitting on my bathroom counter.  It makes my skin feel amazing and smells divine.

3) Nyx Ombre Blush: This fashion inspired blush adds a radiant flush of colour to my cheeks. It goes on silky and blends beautifully.

4) E.L.F. Mineral Infused Face Primer:  I don’t like to cover my face with loads of makeup in the Summer months.  I have actually replaced my foundation with this awesome face primer.  It makes my skin look smooth and soft.  It evens out my skin tone and is the perfect base for my bronzing blushes.

5) Jergens Natural Glow self tanner:  I have been using Jergens for years and years for my gradual self tanning needs.  Their newest formula contains black tea to help enhance your colour without streaks and that weird sunless tanner smell.

6) Ogx Weightless Oil + Lifting Tonic:  It’s easy for your summer locks to look dry and limp.  This gravity defying tonic can be applied to either wet or dry hair and will boost and hydrate your hair.  This fresh formula with moisturize, volumize, and breathe life into your hair.  This one you’ll want to throw into your beach bag for a quick hair refresh.

Look for all these products at the London Drugs beauty department.

Packing Checklist

Summer Pack List

Packing is always such a chore.  I love going away, but sometimes loathe the packing process.  Having been away last week, with another trip around the corner next week, packing is on my mind.  I thought I would share my packing recipe to help with the ease of prepping for a summer getaway.

1) Think about what you will be doing on your trip.  And be realistic.  Do you need a cocktail dress and heels for a family vacay by the beach?  Probably not.  Break down your activities and plan outfits around that.

2) Don’t pack too many shoes.  I am always guilty of this.  I packed 3 pairs of shoes for our last trip and ended up only wearing my metallic  flip flops the whole time.

3) I don’t know about you, but when I’m on vacay I want to be comfortable.  Don’t pack those jeans that are too tight or a dress that rides up.  Pack your favourite go-to items with comfort in mind. And don’t forget about loungewear.  It’s nice to have cozy stuff to hang out in at your accommodations.

The Checklist:

  • a pair of jeans
  • a pair of jean shorts
  • 3-5 tanks/tops (depending on how long you are away)
  • hoodie
  • casual LBD
  • cardigan
  • swimsuit
  • beach coverup
  • beach towel (my faves are the Sunday Dry Goods Turkish towels)
  • sunnies
  • flipflops
  • a multi-purpose bag (can take shopping or to the beach)
  • a couple of simple accessories (hoop earrings, bracelet, etc.)
  • loungewear/jammies and slippers
  • sleep mask (you never know how bright your accommodations may be)
  • hair ties
  • ball cap (because who want to do their hair on vacation?)
  • toiletries / suntan lotion / hair brush / dry shampoo / shampoo & conditioner / blowdryer (if they don’t provide one) / flat iron / undies / bras

I have always been a Fall lover….BUT, we are not there yet.  As excited as I am for cool evenings wrapped in sweaters and blanket scarves, I am really embracing every moment of Summer.  We are all always in a rush to move onto the next rather just enjoying whatever is happening now.   I don’t want pumpkin spice lattes when I can still be sipping lemonade.  If the sun is shining {and it’s been shining A LOT} I say, get out there and play!   Fall will be here soon enough, so let’s embrace the now and relish in the moment.

Maddie and I have been loving playing in our new Native Shoes!  We can run in the dirt, splash in the puddles of the water park, and not worry about our shoes.  Weather your a Mini Lady or all the way grown, a girl wants cute shoes, even when they’re comfortable.  These will definitely be getting packed for our family trip to Palm Springs in October.  Thank you Native Shoes!!!
