Before I became a mom I wanted to make sure I never rocked the “I’ve given up on life” look.  We all think we won’t have those days.  (ok moms, cue laughter).  I now realize these moms have not given up, they are just doing the best they can that day.  Been there!  Many times.  For the days when I have it a bit more together, I have a few sure fire ways to look…dare I say, stylish…even when I have only minutes to get ready.

1) Master a 2-3 minute make up routine.  Keep a makeup bag with only the products you need to create this everyday look.
2) Invest in a great hat for each season.  When dry shampoo just won’t cut it, cover those locks up.
3) Keep your shoe game strong.  Yes, comfort is everything for me, but cute comfort is even better.  We can do better then flip flops.
4) When in doubt, wear jeans (that fit you well).  Nuff said.
5) Keep great fitting, not so basic basics on hand.  This flowy shark bite tee is flattering and great update to a classic fashion item.

So, you’ve had a baby.  Congratulations!  Your maternity clothes are now too big (yay!) but you’re not entirely sure in how to navigate this new post baby bod.  It is hard to figure out what flatters you and, most importantly, what you feel good in after having a baby.  From my own experience, I find simplifying your closet the best way to go.  If you have a closet full of things you don’t want to wear, you will be frustrated every time you go to get dressed.  (Stay tuned for a post with my closet cleaning tips.)  You may also need to shop for a few new items.  Old Navy is an awesome place for jeans; especially for all you curvier gals like me and for those on a budget.  Scroll to the bottom to see my 6 mommy wardrobe musts.

1) A pair of comfortable everyday jeans.  If you’re like me, sweats and leggings are your go to at home attire.  When I go out though, jeans are my go to.  Be sure to shop for both comfort and fit.
2) Longer tops with shape that don’t cling.  This tunic I’m wearing is flowy but also still has some shape to it.  Proportion is key to a flattering look.
3) A leather (or vegan leather) jacket.  This faux leather jacket is the perfect item to transition me into to Spring.  My favourite leather jacket is a bit tight at the moment, so I’ve added this one into my wardrobe in the meantime.
4) A couple pairs of cute, comfortable shoes.  Don’t torture yourself with shoes that rub or hurt to wear.  Hush Puppies and Miz Mooz are a couple of my favourite brands.
5) A great lightweight scarf.  Scarves are such a perfect extra layer for unpredictable Spring weather.  This Jackson Rowe scarf ticks all the boxes…oversized, versatile, light weight, and neutral enough to go with anything.
6) A big ass pair of sunglasses.  Weather I’m dropping Maddie off at pre-school or running some errands, sunglasses are my must have accessory.  Nothing covers my tired eyes or no makeup face quite like a pair of oversized sunnies.

Oh, and don’t forget…..a fab haircut!  A clean and easy coif will help you from feeling disheveled.  Don’t change your look too drastically after having your baby.  Hormones are crazy and I have had friends regret chopping all their hair off in a post baby hormonal rage.  I like to keep my hair shorter, but long enough to still get a messy top knot when needed.

So far, 2016 has been a year of improvement for me.  I have been making lots of little changes to my everyday with my health and the Earth in mind.  Fashion has been a big part of this change.  I have been wearing all the lovely things already in my closet, introduced thrifting into my shopping, and I’ve been purchasing items from locally made labels when possible.  At my own online shop, West + Wind, we have just today launched a Thrift Tee shop.  This section offers up a curated collection of previously loved graphic tees that still embody the vibe of West+Wind.  We are also currently sourcing new eco fabrics for our tees.  Stay tuned for more info.

This beautiful bag arrived on my doorstep at just in time for Earth Day.  I have been wearing items from Canadian label BRAVE Leather for over 10 years.  I adore their products!  It’s clear their style is on point, but here are some other reasons to love them….

  • Made in Canada: Started by Scott Irvine 24 years ago, BRAVE is the exception to mass, overseas production rule. Each bag, belt and cuff is made-to-order by hand in Toronto, Canada by a domestic and highly skilled labour force.
  • Non-Toxic: BRAVE uses an environmentally-friendly and ancient form of tanning called vegetable tanning. Instead of using chromium salts, vegetable tanning uses tannin, a naturally occurring chemical in many trees and plants. Chrome tanning is practiced by 90 per cent of the industry and produces waste that has a high potential for becoming carcinogenic chromium which has been known to contaminate water supplies. Vegetable tanning takes between 3 and 5 weeks longer but it does not use the harsh chemicals that most of the industry does.
  • Reuse and Recycle: BRAVE never sells or throws away leather scrap – instead each piece is used in dozens of creative ways or is saved until a use can be found for.

Here are the details for the other items I am wearing….The blouse is from local Vancouver boutique, Barefoot Contessa.  A purchase I made last Spring.  This skirt has been in my closet forever!  Well, maybe 8 years.  It is from Australian made label, Metalicus.  My sandals were purchased at Target a couple of years ago and I have worn them 50+ times.  My choker was some good old DIY.  It’s velvet belt from a dress that moved from my closet to my sister’s closet.  I just wrap it around twice and tied it in the back.  Voila!  You can find this bag here.

I love shiny new things too, but I’m trying to be smarter about the way I  buy.  Get creative and challenge yourself to live with less, wear what you have, and keep Mother Earth in mind.  Happy Earth Day!

I have written before that one of the simplest ways to get ready quickly in the morning and feel fabulous when you leave the house is to create a uniform.  By uniform I mean a go to look you know you feel good in that you can style different ways to wear for many different occasions.

A version of this look would be my go to outfit when I’m in a pinch or don’t really want to think too much about what to wear.  As a Momma, I don’t have a lot of time to get ready but still want to look cute while being comfortable.  My winter uniform entails… a shorter cotton/lycra skirt, an oversized top, blouse, or sweater, heavy tights, ankle boots, scarf, and a couple well appointed accessories.  This version of my go to look is perfect for lunches with friends, shopping with my Little Miss, or family brunch and weekend outings.

Stay tuned for two more looks of my uniform that I’ll be sharing over the next couple weeks.

This time of year is definitely all about socializing.  It’s impossible to have a new outfit for every occasion, however getting creative with layers and textures can transform your wardrobe to something new.  This outfit gave me that perfect balance of cozy but polished.  I layered two dresses to achieve my desired look.  I was warm enough to be outside taking pictures but not too warm when we were inside sipping London Fogs.  I feel like this one will be making a repeat showing over the holidays.

I will have a last minute Christmas gift post coming this weekend! Be sure to check back for some fun ideas.
