When it comes to a classic look, blue jeans and a black tee are about as classic as you can get.  To elevate this go-to staple I switched out a black tee for a flowy black blouse, loaded on some metallic bracelets, and went with a platform heel and vibrant clutch.  Basic doesn’t have to be boring.

I am wearing Jeans: c/o Salsa .  They are a line known for having the perfect fit for you regardless of your shape.  I am wearing the Bliss Curvy fit jeans.  Top: Bardot (another cute one), Clutch: Forever 21,  Coin Bracelet: LowLuv,  Bangles: Forever 21

This is my final look from my FM Photographics photo-shoot.  It’s definitely my most simplistic look of three.  I really wanted the print contrast to stand out but not clash so I figured simpler was better.

This photo-shoot was exactly what I needed to kick off 2013.   When the winter blahs are kicking in and we all feel fat after gorging ourselves over the holidays, a day of dressing up, makeup, and pretty pics is just what the doctor ordered.   It ‘s the small things this time of year that keep our spirits up.

Five sure ways to brighten your day…
1) Go for a walk when the sun is shining. If you live somewhere like Vancouver, sunshine is a rarity this time of year. Get out there and enjoy it when you can.
2) Make plans with friends for dinner.
3) Buy fresh flowers for your home.
4) Put on some upbeat music. This always works for me:)
5) Plan your own photo session. Hire a professional or enlist a friend. It’s just fun to try something new!

Thank you so much to Jeff at FM Photographics for taking such great pics!

Here is the second look from the photo session I did with FM Photographics.  (See the first one here).   Styling from my own closet has been much more fun than I thought it would be.  When I worked in retail I was getting new clothes (and lots of them) every month…in high season, every week.   A pretty amazing thing, however, I often didn’t really wear many of the pieces I got.  I mean sure I’d wear them, but probably only a few times.   Getting dressed became too easy.  If I didn’t like what I was wearing, I would simply change into something new when I got to work.   Now that I no longer have this kind of shopping lifestyle, I’ve been forced to wear what I have and re-work some things in new ways.

This outfit was a fun one for me.  All the colours are very basic but when all these fabrics got mixed together, it just worked.  It’s kinda got a bit of an 80′s vibe to it and it will be an outfit I will be sure to turn to again.

Skirt: gift,  Jacket: Bardot,  T-shirt: Dex,  Gloves: Forever 21,  Clutch: Value Village,  Booties: Betsey Johnson,  Necklace: Claudia Accessories;  Lips: Estee Lauder  c/o

How about you?  Have you re-discovered a piece in wardrobe?  Anything you thought you were over but is now a favorite?

Since my first Christmas with my husband (then boyfriend), we have been creating our own holiday traditions.  We didn’t set out to do this but traditions having a funny way of creating themselves.  They are small things really but they now seem to mean so much.

My favorite tradition is getting our tree.  Every year we go to Garden Works (a local garden center and nursery) to pick out our perfect tree.  First we browse through their nursery of festive floral arrangements then head outside and grab a cup of hot cocoa to keep us warm while we hunt for our tree. (Aaaand by hunt I mean browse the pre-selected trees they have beautifully hanging.  Not really a  Griswold trek out in to the woods with a chainsaw type thing.) Once we’ve make our selection we head back indoors to Christmas shop in the gorgeous holiday themed gift boutique.  There is always a treasure or two to be found in there.  I think what I love most is that this is an evening with just the two of us.  A perfect little date night that, to me, signifies the start of the holiday season.

What are your holiday traditions?  Any funny or small little thing that means the world to you?

Statement necklaces have become a staple in today’s fashionista closets.  With the holiday season now upon us, bold gems are out there in full force.  Weather you want to be bold or subtle, the right piece will really enhance your outfit.  Here are five from my own closet….
