As much as I adore my knits, I’ve been trying to break away from my usual cold weather attire.   I’ve recently been shopping for winter blouses.  Pretty prints, soft fabrics, and a long or three-quarter sleeve are a must.

Layering a textured wool scarf is a great way to add on some warmth for a more casual look with jeans and boots.

This python print belt gives just a little edge to an otherwise feminine top.

When choosing a basic colour like black, pick something with some interesting detail to keep an element of  fun to a classic hue.

A printed blouse can keep dressing very easy.    The print becomes the accessories, so no need to make this look any fussier.  Just leave as is, with maybe a skinny belt.

If you didn’t notice, I do love to add a belt for shape.  It’s always a good idea to emphasize your smallest bits.

Here’s how I saw it.

The hits….

Soft and beautiful.

Classic and elegant.  I thought Reese looked amazing!

Helen always knows how to dress age appropriate without looking dowdy.  Just gorgeous.

Nicole Richie stole the show in this Julien Macdonald gown, House of Harlow 1960′s clutch, and vintage circle drop earrings.

Tilda Swinton never disappoints with her fashion forward looks.  This year was no exception with her wearing her good friend Haider Ackermann’s skirt suit.  This jacket is amazing!

The misses…..

From the white shoes (yikes!) to this red satin flip collar….I don’t like.

Gleek gone gladiator???  Way too costumey.

No.

I was so disappointed in Michelle’s choice.  Just not the red carpet glam you expect from her.

Hmmmm……I havn’t decided yet…..

Now don’t get me wrong, the women is beautiful, but I can’t decide if the dress is good, or just her body in it.  Thoughts??

Claire went for a J. Mendel dress with classic lines and a graphic design.

I just can’t figure out how I feel about it.  How about you?  Love? or Loathe?

Trend Alert….Green!

From emerald jewels to feathered gowns, green was a hot colour on the red carpet.  There was also a strong presence of ruby red lips.

And that’s the Golden Globes 2012 as I saw it.

Surprise, surprise, yes….I went to another event!  Tis the season.   DJ Ana spun (do people still say that? or am I aging myself?), anyway…and I did some Christmas shopping.  Okay fine, one leopard print crop cardi did make it’s way home with me, but all other purchases were gifts.

Here I am telling Anya (I’m the It Girl) from Vitamin Daily, what I’m sure is the most hilarious story. Can’t you tell? Next photo is Lisa from Tait PR enjoying the musical stylings of DJ Ana and finally the stunning Kelsey (The Anthology) also from Vitamin Daily.

Champagne and mini cupcakes made their way around the room to refuel the shoppers.  One lucky gal won a $500 shopping spree.  Sadly that gal wasn’t me, but what an amazing gift to win!

I was in love with all the luxe looking pieces Banana had.  Rich velvet dresses, sequined tops, and pretty jeweled clutches.  There were tons of cute festive pieces to give a little sparkle to your wardrobe for any upcoming holiday soirees you may have.

So happy with  my fun gift with purchase swag bag.  I received a Banana Republic fragrance, Essie nail polish, and a Beauty Mark gift card with some sweet treats.   The Beauty Mark crew was there to touch up make up and paint up your nails.  A great way to test out some new products.

I often get asked what inspires my wardrobe choices.  So many things inspire me whether I’m shopping for duds or deciding what to wear in the morning.

I have a little list of rules for myself..

1) I must be comfortable.  Not just in the way the outfit physically feels on, but also in how I feel in it.  Days where I’ve maybe tried to hard to make an outfit work or if I’ve gone way outside my personal style, I tend to fidget and fuss all day long.   It kinda throws my whole day off.

2)  I have a rule of three when it comes to color.  One color head to toe can be very pretty and sophisticated.  Two colors can look a little matchy matchy…but three colors?…three colors is visually interesting.  The three colors need to coordinate, but matching is not necessary.

3) Then there are all the other factors….whats the weather doing?, am I having a fat day or a skinny day? (you know we all have them), and what does my day en-tale? (long work day? meetings? event after work?)

4)  The most important rule I have that I have lived by for years is I dress my body type.  Once you get passed the number on the inside of the label and work with what you’ve got (and we’ve all got good bits to work with) getting dressed becomes a whole lot easier. Learn what silhouettes suit you, what colors flatter you, and how to accentuate your assets.

5) And if all else fails, I seek out inspiration.  I read magazines, check out my fave blogs, and since I’m surrounded by stylish women, they inspire me regularly.  Here are some great pics from always inspirational The Sartorialist blog.  Hmm…what to wear tomorrow?

The lovely Alexandra of the To Vogue or Bust blog has recently done a three part series featuring her fave local Vancouver bloggers.  I was honored to see my name listed in her third and final part of her series.

I’m in amazing  company with some of my own favourite blogs like Miss Melissa, Alicia Fashionista, The Anthology, A Haute Mess, and so many other talented and stylish women.

Here’s what Alexandra had to say about me…

” The aptly-named Prairie Girl in the City documents Jen, a former prairie girl who made the move to Vancouver, and her experiences in the local fashion industry, her fashion inspirations, and her general musings.

If you want a good look into the local industry and its social scene, Jen’s blog is the perfect one-stop-shop.  She documents the going-ons of the city beautifully, and I love that she always includes what’s going on in her own life too.  Some bloggers make the choice to not open up too much on their sites, which, depending on the type of content one has on their blog, could be a wise decision.  Having said that though, when it comes to personal blogs, I tend to gravitate to the ones in which you actually get to know the person through their entries.  Jen’s is definitely like that, and that’s why I visit so regularly! ”

Be sure to visit To Vogue or Bust to read about this and so much more!

Thanks Alexandra for the blog love.

Your articles were wonderful and you have introduced me to some new blog gems. xo
