I’m always amazed with how we women can go from being so confident one moment to it all flying out the window the next.  I’ve been heading to the gym quite regularly these days.  We made the switch from a meat-head gym to our local community centre as it has everything we could need as a family.  The gym, a pool, lots of classes, and child minding.  Normally I can just get into my zone and giver with one of my cardio/weights routines.  Last night, however, I struggled to get into my zone.

My warm up cardio was fine, but then I headed for the free weights.  It was a very dude heavy crowd last night.  I was the only woman doing free weights and there were only two other women there and they were both on the bikes.  I guess with it being Spring break all my fellow moms with a bit of squish on their bods are on vacay, and not at the gym.  I kept trying to find a small space to carve out for myself to exercise in.  Every time I turned around there was some twenty something guy sprawled out and grunting doing his fiftieth rep of something to make his arms bigger.  Fade to the 35 year old mom doing lunges with her eight pound free weights and you can see how I was feeling a bit out of my element.

After spending about 20 minutes walking from space to space and getting in a few reps here and there, I got fed up and went back to the cardio machines which were virtually empty.  I wanted to be annoyed by all the guys who were making me feel insecure, but I realized that I was the only one who did that.  I got in my head and couldn’t shake it.  Then on the drive home, Miss Swift gave me some great advice…”Shake it off!”  I think we’re only human to have days where we just aren’t feeling our most amazing self, but then you shake it off and tomorrow comes with a fresh outlook.    One of my confidence boosters?  An outfit I feel I could conquer the world in!

There is some huge #LocalLove happening here in this look.  Absolutely everything I am wearing is either from a local boutique or a local designer/brand.  It wasn’t intentional, but when I started listing my outfit details I was pleased to see all the items I found that have supported local business.  This fabulous white lace dress with a floral print is one of my newest additions to my wardrobe.  While it is still a bit chilly to go full on Spring just quite yet, I couldn’t help but snap and share of few pics because it’s just so pretty.

I am also channeling my inner Dakota Johnson this week with my Oscar inspired hair style…a ponytail.  I LOVE fashion, but sometimes the fashion “experts” are hilarious with the ridiculous obsessions they have.  Like many of you, I watched all the red carpet coverage from the Oscars.  I watched the before, the after, and everything in between.  One thing that was amazing was the ongoing commentary over Dakota Johnson’s ponytail.  Now granted, usually a more glam hair style is chosen for such a formal fete, however, you would think this girl invented the ponytail with they way these fashion critics went on about it.  To paraphrase a few of my favorite comments….

” Dakota Johnson’s ponytail is anything but basic.”  It was pretty basic to me.

” I love her daring choice to wear a ponytail.”  Daring is a low cut dress after 50, a ponytail on a 25 year old starlet is well a ponytail!

” It’s so unexpected and not at all boring.”  I guess it is unexpected, but can’t say I leapt out of my chair when I saw her hair.

” Dakota’s hair is just brilliant.”  Brilliant?  I guess I’m chic-er than I thought when I head to the grocery store.

” Ugh!  How much are we loving the ponytail on Dakota Johnson?”  Clearly you are all loving it ALOT!

Maybe it’s because my hair style is pretty much the exact same as hers or that I’ve just worn a lot of ponytails over the years, but hearing this uber simple hair style was the top pick seems ridiculous…but I still love it!

I’m sucker for comfort.  If I’m going to be spending an evening out, I refuse to be uncomfortable.  That said, this would be another look I’ve styled up using all my favourite components for my go to uniform.  {See my first uniform look here.}  While shopping at one of my local shopping haunts, Barefoot Contessa, I spotted this fabulous flowy tunic and floral leggings.  Such a simple way to pull a look together for a night out with the girls or a date night with the Hubs.  I simply added one of my many fitted minis and accessorized with some sparkle.  Red lips can always kick your look up a notch too.  Getting ready for a fun evening with people you love shouldn’t be torture, so ladies, keep it simple.

It’s not too late!  You’ve still got time to find last minute fabulous gifts for the ladies still on your list.  Last week I went to one of my favorite local boutiques {Barefoot Contessa} to finish my Christmas shopping and maybe pick up a couple things for myself too.  It’s just all too hard to resist.

For the gardener…

Paperwhites {$18}.  These beauties have been made by Barefoot Contessa boutique owner herself.  She has sourced beautiful vintage silverware and teacups and filled them with forced bulbs.  A pretty little plant with white flowers  will grow over the winter.  Then this Spring they can be transferred into a bigger pot for outside.

For the tea lover…

As a tea lover myself, this is the type of gift I love to give.  The perfect thing for winter nights.
Gold Lip teacup & saucer $29.90
Honey dipper $7.95
Teapot teabag dish $3.95
Teatime pastel napkins $6
Peppermint tea $3.95

For the hostess…

Are you the one bringing the desert to your Christmas soiree?  Why not bring your lovely hostess a gorgeous glittery cake server {$20.95} and spoons {$6.95 each}?  Available in gold and silver.
Sidebar: Panetone {Italian Christmas sweet bread} is one of the most delicious things ever!  Happy to give and receive it.

All these lovely things are available at Barefoot Contessa except the Panetone which I purchased at Home Sense.

My head to to look: c/o Barefoot Contessa

Maddie: Arrow & Lace Designs

The holiday season is in full swing, and that means parties and festive get togethers.  Most of our parties are on the more casual side these days, but I make sure I have at least one occasion  to get all dolled up!  Besides choosing a flattering silhouette, I make sure that the pieces I chose for the holidays can still work there way into my wardrobe when the making merry season is over.  This skirt will be perfect in the Spring too and these shoes will go with anything!

Barefoot Contessa is one of those local fabulous boutiques that I am bound to score some perfect pieces of pretty.  I was drawn to this skirt immediately.  I adore this style of skirt (flattering on almost all body types), however the popular ones out there don’t exactly fit a gal with some curvy bits.  This skirt has all the components I’ve been looking for…elastic waist, lady like length, lined, a gorgeous print, and under $100. The store is full of so many beautiful pieces like taffeta skirts, faux fur coats, lacey dresses, and sequins galore.  They truly have anything I could possible need this holiday.
