Accessory Style

With my wardrobe being quite limited these days, I’ve been playing with my accessories to create different looks with just a few basic pieces.  This inspiration board shows just four ways to group accessories together to create a specific look.  Pretty much all my looks are on the casual side these days.  Fall is my favourite season for casual looks.  A simple jeans and tee outfit can be amped up with the right scarf, hat, and boots.  Casual weekends need only a cute coffee tumbler and cap to cover your messy locks.  My favourite accessory that is popping up this season are the adorable pom pom keychains.  I don’t have one (yet), but I am obsessed!  So if you feel like you have nothing to wear, look no further than your lovely collection of accessories.

I am currently 25 weeks and 4 days into my pregnancy with twins.   Things have been going well and my little ones have been growing beautifully.  I have had to treat this pregnancy much different then my pregnancy with my daughter.  I have way more doctor’s appointments and I go to the hospital for an ultrasound every two weeks.  It’s quite amazing to see them grow from appointment to appointment.  It is such a miracle to see.  When you tell people you are expecting twins, inevitably, there are a lot of follow up questions.  I would totally be the same way!  Twins are quite fascinating and we’ve been learning so much as we go through this pregnancy.  Since there are so many questions, I thought I would share the five questions I get asked the most.

1) When are you due?  My 40 week due date is January 9th, however full term with twins is considered 37 weeks.  This would make my twin due date December 19th (ish).  With multiples it’s really not that easy though.  There are so many different variables than can affect when they arrive, so these are more just like markers and goals to work towards.

2) Was it a surprise when you found out?  YES!  I actually went to my first ultrasound on my own as it was right in the middle of the day and I didn’t want my husband to have to take time off work for it.  It’s usually a pretty routine appointment with them confirming your due date, etc.  When the ultrasound technician told me there were TWO BABIES, I was completely shocked, cried some happy tears, and couldn’t wait to tell my husband when he got home from work.  I think it took us about a week to process the fact the fact that we are having twins.  I still have little moment from time to time where it all just feels surreal.

3) Do you know what you are having?  Yes, we do.  We are having identical girls.

4) Do you have a history of twins in your families?  One of my doctors told me that with identical twins, there is not really any bearing on family history like with fraternal twins.  It’s just one of those little miracles that can happen at random.

5) How do you feel about going from one to three kids?   I definitely am feeling all the feelings.  I’m nervous, scared, excited, overjoyed, and a bit fearful of the unknown.  As we were only really planning to have one more child, switching gears to prepping for two more can be a bit overwhelming.  On a very personal note, I actually had one pregnancy before my daughter Madelyn that resulted in a miscarriage.  It was one of the hardest things I have ever gone through and still have a hard time talking about it without tearing up.  That babies’s due date was June 7th.  The day I found out I was having twins was on June 7th.  I was actually feeling a bit nervous going to the ultrasound on that day, but ended up with the most amazing gift.  Friends joke with us that our lives are over and things will  be nuts once they are born…which it probably will be.  However, this feels like how our family was meant to be and we can’t wait for the wild ride ahead.

Fall Bump Style Inspo
I find a lot of the bump fashion advice kind of annoying.  I am constantly being told that I can get away with not wearing maternity items.  I simply need to wear loose fitting clothes or size up and I’ll look fabulous.  I call bulls!#% on the whole thing!  I’m sure this works for some women who are already quite slender and gain only a wee bit in their tummy.  This is not me.  I’m got curvy bits to begin with and my bump (according to the lady at the bank and the random stranger at Tim Hortons) is huge already.  I am almost 23 weeks pregnant with my twins and look a lot like I did with Madelyn at the end of my pregnancy.  I gave in to maternity duds early on with a few exceptions of course.  My basic garments are all maternity with a few pieces already in my closet thrown in.  Why be uncomfortable when I gan be wearing glorious elastic waist band pants?  Delicious! So, if you are expecting and tired of feeling like a freak because you are pregnant and wearing maternity clothes (go figure), then here is my round up of what I have in my current capsule maternity wardrobe.
The Maternity Items list:
Half a dozen tees and tanks
A pair of jeans (I’m all about the ones with the giant elastic waist)
One other pair of pants
Overalls (for a fun item to mix it up a bit)
undies
PJ’s
sweatpants/cozy pants for lounging in
a little black dress (something simple that can be dressed up or down)
The Non-Maternity Items List:
Accessories ~ hats, jewelry, bags, scarves (all things that you already have that can switch up the look of a basic outfit)
Flat comfortable shoes ~ You may have some already, but if not, buy yourself a pair.  I recommend slip ons.  Bending is near impossible for me these days.
Cardis / Capes: I have lots of long, flowy cardigans that do layer well over my maternity pieces.  I have a couple of cute plaid capes I plan on using for my outerwear this year.  I’m hoping I can get away with not having to buy a maternity coat as it will be short lived.
Sports bras ~ I’m really not a fan of underwire and find that sports bras are the way to go.  I wear them almost everyday.
Where I like to shop:
Motherhood Maternity for jeans, tees, tanks, loungewear, overalls.
Thyme Maternity for underwear and PJ’s.
Old Navy for fashion items like my little black dress.
I also have some pieces from Topshop and Asos from my last pregnancy.
You really don’t need to buy a ton of stuff.  I recommend buying great basics that you will wear to death.  It’s such a short period of time so embrace the capsule wardrobe and have fun with accessories.

shirt: West + Wind (now on SALE for only $12), jeans: JBF Vancouver (consignment), belt: Monkey & Peanut, backpack: Skip Hop, runners: Michael Kors, hair clip: Peekabloom Baby

I can’t quite believe it, but here I am writing about back to school.  My little Madelyn is starting preschool this Fall.  She is so excited!  I hope she stays that excited when the day actually comes.  We are less than a week away from her staring.  We bought her this adorable backpack when we went on our trip to Palm Springs last Fall.  She hasn’t really used it since, so it feels new to her again. I found her these cute little jeans at the JBF Consignment sale back in the Spring.  They were a bit big on her, but fit great now!   I plan on doing a bit more thrift shopping for her (and maybe for myself for maternity wear).  Thrifting is such a great to not only save money, but to also make a smaller footprint on the environment.

I had to, of course, grab Maddie a couple tees from my shop West + Wind.  In case you missed the announcement, my business partner Kait and I will be closing our shop at the end of September.  Kait is expecting her first child in just a few weeks, and I am expecting twins at the end of the year.  With all these babies on the way, we decided our focus should be on our growing families.  We have a BIG sale on now.  All our adult tees are all $20, kids tees are $12, the Thrift Tees are just $7, and all jewelry is $10 and under.  Okay…..that’s enough of my sales pitch;)

So Momma’s…where do you like to shop for your ones for all there back to school looks?  Do you thrift?  Online shop?  Hit up the local shops?  To head to the national brand stores?

1) Konifer wood watch (c/o) : A very cool Canadian brand of watches all made of wood.  This oversized one is a beauty.
2) I Wear the Headdress head wraps:  Hot days mean keeping my hair up and back.
3) my Mansur Gavriel bucket bag + clutch : Nothing new, but love bring out some old faves after a while.
4) little gold rings
5) Fall fashion mags : Not really doing my usual Fall wardrobe planning.  With a big baby bump to dress, I’ll just be doing the best I can.
6) Racinne Ultimate Youth Power Eye Serum (c/o):  My new go-to to help battle my tired eyes.  It’s youth in a bottle.
